- <p> DIED. NIKOLAI OGARKOV, 76, ex-marshal of the Soviet Union; in
- Moscow. In September 1983 he earned an especially dubious place
- in cold-war history by giving orders that led to shooting down
- a South Korean civilian airliner--KAL Flight 007--which
- had accidentally drifted into Soviet airspace. As chief of staff,
- it also fell to Ogarkov to defend the action, which he truculently
- did in a press conference, insisting the Soviets had reason
- to believe the plane was on a spy mission.
