  15. <p>     DIED. NIKOLAI OGARKOV, 76, ex-marshal of the Soviet Union; in
  16. Moscow. In September 1983 he earned an especially dubious place
  17. in cold-war history by giving orders that led to shooting down
  18. a South Korean civilian airliner--KAL Flight 007--which
  19. had accidentally drifted into Soviet airspace. As chief of staff,
  20. it also fell to Ogarkov to defend the action, which he truculently
  21. did in a press conference, insisting the Soviets had reason
  22. to believe the plane was on a spy mission.
